Last updated 29-apr-08 I have painted professionally since 1980,initially in Sutherland one of Scotlands's most Northerly counties.The beautifull village of Tongue on the far North coast was my base and it was from here that my love of the wild and rugged Scottish scenery was born. Painting throughout all of the seasons,I learned to capture not only the basic details but also the moods and changing atmospheres of this wonderful area. This is something that I now translate into all the many other areas that I paint. As a contrast I took the opportunity of visits to Edinburgh. This gave me the chance of viewing a complete change of subject matter,namely the Georgian New Town and the much older Old Town with all it's closes,narrow streets and wynds and a host of buildings steeped in the history of Scotland's capital city. However in 1993 my wife and I decided it was time for change. We moved in the December to here, Pitlochry in the heart of highland Perthshire. here the scenery is softer than the Northern Highlands but with beautifully forested hills and many hill and mountain vistas. the rivers and lochs simply call out to be painted,and with the ever changing weather patterns,no views can ever be the same.Visits to our three major local lochs, Loch Tay,Loch Rannoch and Loch Tummel will surely give evidence of this. In October 2007 we moved to nearby Blair Atholl. Below is West Lodge where we now live.
A new area I am working on are paintings of Rosslyn Chapel. This is the chapel that features in the Da Vinci Code novel and film.[Click on Rosslyn Chapel ] I work mainly in watercolour and acrylic mediums, details of which I will explore within the next pages. The subject matter that I cover apart from land and seascapes,include,town and village scenes,steam trains,cars,boats,planes,birds and animals etc. I now am undertaking portraits and will work from photographs of the subject. This is certainly a wide range,but it does give me the chance to keep my work varied and hopefully never become stale and unimaginative .
